The Pyithu Hluttaw session continued yesterday with parliamentarians holding discussions on a proposal calling for the expansion of the organisational set-up of the Public Health Department to effectively provide public health services.
Dr Sai Mauk Kham of Lashio Constituency pointed out that the Health Department, handling a heavy workload that involves administering vaccines nationwide and undertaking the monitoring and control of infectious diseases needs infrastructure, human resources and adequate funding so that its tasks can be accomplished the lawmaker said, seconding the motion.
In his discussion, U Myint Oo of Thanatpin Constituency, who also seconded the proposal, pointed out an inadequate ratio of midwives to births in his constituency with one midwife for about 3,700 people. He called for the assigning of midwives, an assistant and a health staff member to each village and providing them with further training to be appointed permanent staff.
Regarding a question on vacant doctor posts in townships and station hospitals, Union Minister Dr Myint Htway said that 2,000 doctors recruited by the ministry will be assigned to the states and regions following the completion of an eight-week training course at the Phaunggyi Central Institute of Civil Service.
The Union minister added that doctors have been assigned to Myaukpyin and Kyauktaing station hospitals in Mindon Township, Magwe Region.
Next, U Wai Hlaing Tun put forward a report on the third revised Ward or Village-tract Administration Law to the Pyithu Hluttaw and the Speaker invited those willing to submit amendments to the revised law to list their names for discussions.
